Registration For New MPA Students

registerCongratulations to students admitted for Spring 2016 to the MPA programs, both online and campus. You can take the following steps to plan your course of study and register for classes. MPA services at mpaadvising@jjay.cuny.edu can assist if you encounter problems registering.

1. Make an appointment for advising

New students should contact MPA Services at mpaservices@jjay.cuny.edu to set up an appointment for advising. Our goal is to create a course of study plan that reflects your program, specialization and course preferences, and that integrates any transfer graduate courses into your plans. Advising can take place by telephone. You do not have to appear in person.

Selecting classes for your first semester can be done before advising because there are specific courses you will need to complete.

2. Claim Your CUNYfirst ID and your John Jay email account.

If you have not been a CUNY student before you will need to claim your ID number for CUNYfirst, which is our record system. This is necessary to access registration.

If you need to communicate with college officials about your registration, please use your JJCCJ email account.

There is a Newly Accepted Graduate Student Checklist that also provides useful information.

3. Register for Classes

The following are the classes that students should register for, depending on their program and mode of study. Part-time students typically enroll for one to two courses, and full-time students enroll for three to four courses. Questions and Answers

Can my Commitment Deposit be waived?

Yes.  Admissions honor waivers of deposit fees if students want to register but do not have time to submit the deposit or their financial aid paperwork as well. Students must complete the Commitment Deposit Form, selecting to defer the deposit,  email the commitment deposit request to graduateadmissions@jjay.cuny.edu so that Admissions can track these waivers and get the records prepared and coded so that the students are allowed to register for classes.

I have an admission condition requiring that I take a statistics class. What do I do?

Confer with MPA advising. It is not necessary to take the class during the Fall semester, and in some cases your MPA advisor can identify an equivalent course that you have already completed.

I have been allowed to begin my studies as a non-matriculated student. What do I do?

You are permitted to take the following courses:  PAD 700, 702 or 723, 705 or 706, and PAD 715. If you complete them with an average of B (3.0) or better, and pass the MPA Qualifying Examination during PAD 700, you will be admitted as a matriculated student. Contact MPA advising at mpaadvising@jjay.cuny.edu for assistance in registering for your classes.

Why would a student want to substitute 702/723 and 705/706?

This is an opportunity for students who have not made a firm decision between the MPA in Public Policy and Administration (MPA-PPA) and the MPA in Inspection and Oversight (MPA-IO) to sample the perspective of the other program, without having to take an additional course.

I want to complete the Advanced Certificate in Forensic Accounting. What do I do?

Your advisor is Yvonne Purdie who can be emailed at ypurdie@jjay.cuny.edu. You will complete the MPA-IO and select the Forensic Accounting specialization. Professor Purdie will develop a course of study plan that meets the requirements ot the MPA-IO and the Advanced Certificate, and makes you eligible to sit for the CPA examination in New York.

How do I access my online classes?

You can access Blackboard here: Blackboard.

Within Blackboard we also have an online course orientation which explains how to navigate your courses in Blackboard.

I am interested in the new JD/MPA program and the new MPA-IO specialization in Health Care Inspection and Oversight. Where can I access more information?

I am taking my classes at West Point. How do I register?

Contact Jennifer Heiney at jheiney@jjay.cuny.edu. She is the Program Administrator and Advisor.

How can I receive Differential Tuition Financial Support?

This is automatic – $100 per course – if you have filed a FAFSA financial aid application and have “unmet need.” You receive your aid as a refund in October. If you have a loan the refund may be credited to your loan.
